My Voice Went Soft

My Voice Went Soft takes its title from my time in the hospital, where I often felt that the staff listened more to protocols than to me as a person. In the intensity of childbirth, my voice seemed to soften, to disappear into a room ruled by screens, numbers, and urgency. That moment stayed with me, and I was determined to make a series about it.

But when I finally returned to my studio, something unexpected happened: the work poured out of my hands. Instead of heaviness, there was joy. Instead of tension, energy. It felt as if everything surrounding pregnancy and birth had fallen away, and I could breathe again.

The series grows from that shift — from losing my voice to reclaiming it, from being overruled by procedures to rediscovering lightness. What began as a response to an overwhelming experience is unfolding into images that celebrate the space that opens after intensity, the moment when life tilts back toward colour and possibility.

The series will be presented this autumn at Art Gallery O‑68.
